Fridge Freezer Buyers Guide
Fridge Freezers are a great way to save space in your kitchen and enjoy the benefits of having both a fridge and a freezer in close proximity. There are a number of factors to consider when purchasing a Fridge Freezer, but as long a you pay attention to a few key points you'll soon be able to find the perfect fridge freezer for you.
Fridge Freezer Size
When choosing a Fridge Freezer there are a couple of different factors to consider - firstly, work out the width of the space that your Fridge Freezer needs to fit into - Fridge Freezers generally come in 3 sizes:
- 54cm Fridge Freezers
- 60cm Fridge Freezers
- 70cm (for USA style Fridge Freezers)
Once you know the gap your fridge freezer fits into, then you need to consider the trade off between Fridge and Freezer space. Some Fridge Freezers offer a 50/50 split between Fridge and Freezer space, whilst others have more space for the Fridge section.
Think about the types of food that you buy most when making your decision - if you feel you purchase the majority of fresh food then Fridge Freezer with a large Fridge space will be more suitable, whilst if you purchase more Frozen food then a Fridge Freezer with a 50/50 split is preferable.

Fridge Freezer Energy Consumption
As your Fridge Freezer will be running 356 days a year, 24 hours a day - it is worth considering the Energy Rating before you purchase. Most Fridge Freezers made in the last few years will be either A or B rated, but many older model made more than 7 or 8 years ago may be a much lower rating.
Having a Fridge Freezer with a higher Energy Rating will provide a number of benefits - firstly a Fridge Freezer with an 'A' rating will cost less to run that a Fridge Freezer with a 'D' rating. And secondly, as you'll be using less energy - you'll be helping the environment.
In terms of actual running cost, a typical 'A' rated Fridge Freezer will cost approximately 28 per year to run.
Fridge Freezer Star Rating
When looking to buy fridge freezers one thing that is often overlooked is the 'Star Rating' - many people confuse this with the energy rating, but these are two totally separate indicators.
The 'Star Rating' refers to the ability of the Freezer compartment to Freeze food - so for example a Freezer compartment with a 2 star rating is only suitable for short term storage of food that is already frozen and are not suitable for actually freezing food. Most people will need something in the region of a 4 or 5 star rating, which is a Fridge Freezer suitable for freezing fresh food for long periods of time.
